The Socials Department here at Burnaby North is bringing back our Spring Break Eurotrip for March 2024! This year's trip is to Italy & Greece through Explorica Tours. Our Socials Department has been taking students to Europe for many years. Check out our "Field Trips & Eurotrip" link above for all information! Wear Orange Wednesday September 29th! Orange Shirt Day is officially September 30th. As school is not in session that day, we are participating in the event on Wednesday September 29th. Our Student Government students made an amazing video that was shared during our classes during a special block allocated for discussing Orange Shirt Day.

2021 Student Vote
The 2021 Canadian federal election was held on September 20, 2021, to elect members of the House of Commons to the 44th Canadian Parliament. Our Social Studies Department had their classes vote in our STUDENT VOTE program the classes before the election. Our students voted and the results were shared within the school and was compared to the BC Provincial Results. We encourage our students to become active citizens in their community and hope this Student Vote prepares them to vote in an actual election as they leave high school. Black History Month
February 2021 Every February, people in Canada are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities. The 2021 theme for Black History Month is: "The Future is Now". At North, our Leadership, Social Studies, and Social Justice classes are working on projects around the school and our library is showcasing Black-Canadian authors throughout the month. We are also excited to share a project from Moscrop Secondary's Social Studies Department 28 Days of Excellence Challenge. Black Shirt Day
Friday January 15th 2021 Social Justice Class Students, Staff and the District in Burnaby supported an Anti-Racism initiative created by a coalition from Vancouver to promote anti-racism. Taking inspiration from the effect that Pink Shirt Day has had in schools to open up discussion about bullying, this group proposed the creation of Black Shirt Day to promote the discussion of Black history. They proposed the date of Jan. 15 as it is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Our Social Justice 12 class got involved and made Black Shirt Posters put up around the school and students have been discussing the events in the USA and locally in their social studies classrooms. Leadership Class Food Hampers
December 2020 Leadership Classes Our Leadership students worked hard over the past few months to help gather food, toys, and gift cards for their Food Hamper drive. They were able to put together 10 food hampers to go to families in our community, with staple foods, gift cards, and toys for this holiday season. On behalf of our Leadership students here at North, we wish everyone and their families a very Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! |

Orange Shirt Day has been declared on September 30th annually and has been happening for the past 7 years in Canada. The events were designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Chief Justice Murray Sinclair challenged all participants to keep the reconciliation process alive, and as a result of the realization that every former student had similar stories. This date is held in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and well-being, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Staff and Students at North were encouraged to wear orange to school today, read the story of Phyllis Webstad, and were invited to sign an orange puzzle piece for a school wide activity at lunch in the North Gym. Thank you to Ms. Byrne's Leaders and Mentors for their participation as well.

Socials 10 Port Moody Station Museum
Trench Field Trip January 2020 Braving the extreme cold and snowy conditions, Ms. Jolliffe's Social Studies 10 classes spent their afternoons in the trenches at the Port Moody Station Museum learning about life in the trenches during World War I. Markus, their tour guide, is an expert on World War I and gave in-depth trench tours while also touching on communication during the war and in the involvement of animals. To make the experience even more realistic, the snow and conditions were discussed to show the realities the soldiers went through. A special thanks goes out to Ms. Jolliffe and Markus Farhner from the Port Moody Station Museum for organizing and making this special weather-realistic experience happen for our students! |
The Effects of Slavery & the Underground Railroad
Social Studies 9 Slave Quilt Project
December 2019
Ms. Carey's and Ms. Alve's Socials 9 classes collaborated and worked together on an Underground Railroad Slave 'Quilt' using symbols and images used to try to flee to freedom in Canada. After a few weeks of lessons and activities, the classes came together using modern day emojis to represent the same images as the original Slave Quilts would have had. The 'quilt' is now hanging in Ms. Alves' room in 210.

Socials 9 Fort Langley Field Trip 2019
October 2019 Our annual Socials 9 Fort Langley field trip had our grade 9's go to the Fort for an all day experience. The trip includes an in-depth educational group challenge within the Fort itself, a scavenger hunt around the town of Fort Langley looking at historic artifacts, CN Rail Station, the Fraser River, and a visit to the Langley Centennial Museum. This grade-wide field trip gives our students the opportunity to experience what life would have been like during the early days of BC and Canada, along with what life was like during the Gold Rush, and how the early settlers worked with the Aboriginal First Nations of the area. This year the weather was fantastic and the students had a great time! They even had a chance to try gold-panning! We thank all the staff and volunteers who helped make these days possible! This year we had two AMAZING days of sunshine to make it even more memorable for our students! |

Annual Socials 10 Victoria Field Trip
April 2019 Our annual Socials 10 (previously Socials 11 before the curriculum change) Victoria Field Trip happened over 2 days in April 2019. Each year we take all Socials 10 students on the ferry over to Victoria for a day of exploration at the Royal BC Museum, the Legislature Tour, and a Scavenger Hunt of the Victoria harbour front. Our volunteers include past students, and retired North socials teachers and we thank them for spending the days with us! The students have to complete a workbook/scavenger hunt package and then a Victoria Photo Scrapbook upon their return. The weather was amazing! Thanks to Mr. Thiessen for organizing this great event and to all staff and volunteers who go to make this such a memorable trip! Also thank you to MLA Janet Routledge for meeting with our students! |

Students in Socials 11 Explorations were given an opportunity to experience a recreated World War I trench system, officers quarters, early WWI planes, and more at the Port Moody Station Museum. Our tour leader Markus dressed in a Canadian Officer's Uniform and gave an informative tour of the last 100 Days of WWI and what life was like for soldiers in the trenches. They also got to see the train car, technology from the early 1900's and more. Thank you to Markus and the Port Moody Heritage Society for a great tour and location to bring students.

Burnaby's Annual Holocaust Symposium
November 7th 2017 Michael J. Fox Theatre at Burnaby South Social Studies 11 Students Students in Burnaby have a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with Holocaust Survivors and hear their stories and experiences. This 9th annual Burnaby event took place on November 7th 2017 and there were close to 600 students throughout the district that attended the symposium this year. North took close to 80 students from Social Studies 11 classes. This event is so powerful but is limited because there are not many survivor's left to share their experiences with students. Thank you to Mr. Dale Lintott the Social Studies Department Head at Moscrop for organizing this year's event. Also, a very special thank you to Rene Goldman and Marguerite Quddus for sharing their experiences with our Burnaby students. Thank you.

Social Studies Department Highlights 2016-2017
Geography Indian Arm/Burrard Inlet Boat Field Trip
Tuesday May 30th 2017
On Tuesday we took our Geography 12, AP Human Geography 12, Rethink, and Aboriginal Education students on two boats (Oceanwatch I and Oceanwatch II) out on the water! We left from Rocky Point Park and did a harbour tour of the inlet and then up into Indian Arm before heading under the Second Narrows (Iron Workers Memorial) Bridge into the harbour. We made a lunch stop at the Lonsdale Quay and then made our way back to Rocky Point. Students were able to see the Port in action, cargo and oil tankers, the Kinder Morgan site, Suncorp, a BC Ferry on dry-dock in North Van , Imperial oil refineries, and MUCH MUCH more. Students were given a unique opportunity to see Vancouver and it's port activities/industries from the water and examine the environmental impact of all of it on our waterways. We also were able to identify and point out traditional First Nations lands, settlement areas, and historic sites along the tour from Port Moody to North Vancouver. Although a bit wet and rainy, a great time was had by all!

SFU History Department Field Trip
Wednesday May 17th 2017 Our Burnaby North Socials Department has been given an amazing opportunity once again for our senior students to attend an out-reach experience with SFU this coming February 2017. Ms. Carey has organized this event on Wednesday May 17th 2017 for students to attend a half-day field trip up at SFU and the SFU History Department. Our students will have a chance to sit-in on engaging mini-lectures with SFU History Professors, get Campus Tours, and have a Q&A session with Grad Students and Professors about life at University and careers in History. Students going will be reminded closer to the date and are being asked to get to SFU on their own and meet outside the library (Convocation Mall) no later than 11:45am. Student Vote 2017
All Social Studies 11 Classes at Burnaby North May 5th-9th 2017 Student Vote provides youth under the voting age with an opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and build the habits of active and engaged citizenship. The program is an excellent way to create a ‘teachable moment’ out of the official election. Students learn about government and the electoral process, and research the issues, parties and candidates through classroom learning, campaign activities, media consumption and family dialogue. On Student Vote Day, students take on the roles of election officials and coordinate a vote for the election candidates running in their school’s electoral district. Here at North we have all Socials 11 classes and some other classes as well joining in on this process between May 5th and May 9th. |

Geography 4-Day Sailing Trip
Bluewater Adventures Gulf Island Trip April 15th-18th 2017 Over the Easter Weekend Ms. Carey & Mr. Sokugawa took 18 students on a 4-Day Sailing trip with Bluewater Adventures. We took the 5am ferry to Sydney Harbour near Victoria and boarded the Island Roamer for 4 days on the open water! Our students cooked meals, cleaned heads, learned to sail, hiked, kayaked, and even had an Easter morning jump in the ocean! Stops included Portland Island, Russell Island, Saturna Island (Winter Cove), and the Straight of Georgia. We saw an abundance of wildlife including stellar sea lions, harbour seals, otters, countless birds, dolphins, crabs, tidal pool life, and more. Unfortunately no whales were to be seen. We even stopped for a shore hike up Mt. Norman for an amazing view of all the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. An amazing time was had by all! Until next year! |
Day of Truth & Reconciliation
January 9th 2017
For the third year in a row, Mr. Lekakis and the Social Studies Department organized the 3rd Annual Day of Truth & Reconciliation here at Burnaby North. The purpose of this day was to raise awareness about the experiences of Aboriginal Peoples in BC and across Canada (i.e.: Residential Schools, Assimilation, Inequality, and more). The event, aimed at raising awareness about aboriginal cultures and world-views, as well as the residential school experience, was first organized by social studies teacher John Lekakis in 2015. This year, the day featured a series activities and lessons and a gripping theatrical presentation called Qwalena: The Wild Woman Who Steals Children by First Nations storyteller Dallas Yellowfly with 3 Crows Productions, a group of indigenous storytellers committed to raising public awareness about the intergenerational impact of the residential school experience on the personal lives and communities of indigenous people today. The rest of the day included break out sessions for students on various topics with guests, elders, and residential school survivors. Fort Langley Field Trip 2016 October 12th & 13th 2016 The Socials Department has been working on the new curriculum and have made changes to the dates of our annual grade wide field trips. This year our Socials 9 Fort Langley Field Trip will be held on October 12th and October 13th 2016. All classes and blocks going are listed below on the correct day. Please meet by the busses outside the library at 8:30am on the day you are going on the field-trip. Our annual Socials 9 Fort Langley field trip had our grade 9's go to the Fort for an all day experience. The trip includes an in-depth educational group challenge within the Fort itself, a scavenger hunt around the town of Fort Langley looking at historic artifacts, CN Rail Station, the Fraser River, and a visit to the Langley Centennial Museum. This grade-wide field trip gives our students the opportunity to experience what life would have been like during the early days of BC and Canada, along with what life was like during the Gold Rush, and how the early settlers worked with the Aboriginal First Nations of the area. This year the weather was fantastic and the students had a great time! They even had a chance to try gold-panning! We thank all the staff and volunteers who helped make these days possible!

BNS 2nd Annual Day of Truth & Reconciliation
Monday April 18th 2016
Mr. Lekakis and a group of Socials teachers recently organized the 2nd Annual Day of Truth & Reconciliation here at Burnaby North. The purpose of this day was to raise awareness about the experiences of Aboriginal Peoples in BC and across Canada (i.e.: Residential Schools, Assimilation, Inequality, and more). The day included our keynote speaker, Brad Marsden and many Aboriginal Elders, guests, dancers, story-tellers, and community members including Indigenous storyteller and Surrey resident Old Hands (in picture on left). In preparation for this day, all Socials 9 and 10 classes were given a lesson on residential schools and had an opportunity to paint rocks as a symbolic way of recognizing the past and moving forward with healing for the future All grade 9 and 10 students in the school had a morning and afternoon assembly with Aboriginal lessons, cultural experiences, and powerful conversations with our guests throughout the day.The students ended the day with an assembly with a talk with Gwawaenuk First Nation Chief Robert Joseph.

BC Law Court Field Trip

This past week saw all 4 blocks of our Law 12 classes go to the BC Law Courts in Vancouver where our students were able to sit in on court cases, speak with lawyers and court justices. This annual field trip gives our students a chance to see the court system in action and ask questions about careers in law, social justice, and reconciliation. We were very pleased that a BC Judge has contacted our department thanking our students for having such insight and curiosity about the laws and court systems within our province. Another great experience!

SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY FIELD TRIP
History Department & Campus Tour Wednesday February 17th & Wednesday March 2nd 2016 Our Burnaby North Socials Department has been given an amazing opportunity for our senior students to attend an out-reach experience with SFU this coming February and March 2016. Ms. Carey has organized 2 field trip dates for our students to attend a half-day field trip up at SFU and the SFU History Department. Our students will have a chance to sit-in on engaging mini-lectures with SFU History Professors, get Campus Tours, and have a Q&A session with Grad Students and Professors about life at University and careers in History. Students going will be reminded closer to the date and are being asked to get to SFU on their own and meet outside the library (Convocation Mall) no later than 11:45am on their designated day. Our Psychology 11 and 12 classes had a chance to see a Guest from the BC Schizophrenia Society on Thursday January 14th. Lyle came back to North and shared his experiences with Schizophrenia, OCD, and Bipolar Disorder. He gave a very personal account of living his life with Schizophrenia and the stigmas attached to the disorder. This session included a Question and Answer component and the students were very engaged and connected. We thank Lyle and the BC Schizophrenia Society for coming to North and giving this great opportunity for our students!

In December our Law 12 students had an amazing opportunity to hear presentations from the John Howard Society of the Lower Mainland. This organization assists people impacted by criminal justice so that they can reclaim their lives, making everyone safer.They also offer support and housing to individuals with developmental disabilities who are at risk of homelessness or involvement in the criminal justice system, and who may have concurrent issues of mental health or addictions.They are a non-profit charitable organization in Vancouver providing assistance with housing, life-skills, and community-based support with the goal of getting individuals to achieve greater independence and value their positive contributions to society. They advocate for just and humane punishment for crime and educate on the social, economic and personal costs of crime. Over 120 students had a chance to hear about the work the society does and have a question & answer session with our speakers.

In Recognition & Support of Residential School Survivors
Students and staff around the Burnaby School District donned orange shirts Wednesday September 30th to show support for survivors of Canada’s residential schools. Orange Shirt Day is an annual day of recognition that started in Williams Lake in 2013 as part of a commemoration project for the St. Joseph Mission Residential School. The orange shirt pays tribute to the experience of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, who went to the school in 1973/74.

Student Vote 2015
All Social Studies 11 Students at Burnaby North will be participating in the Student Vote Election Week. During National Student Vote Week (October 13-16, 2015), students across Canada will take on the roles of deputy returning officers and poll clerks, and organize a vote using authentic election materials. Identical to the official election process, students have the opportunity to vote for the candidates running in their local riding. The ballots are counted by each school and reported to CIVIX and the Student Vote results are released publicly by CIVIX on election night and shared with media for broadcast and publication. With the Federal Election happening in correlation with our Socials 11 Unit on Government and Citizenship, this is an excellent opportunity for our students to get involved in the election process. Day of Truth & Reconciliation
Spring 2015 Last year Mr. Lekakis organized a school-wide Day of Truth & Reconciliation for our staff and students. The purpose of this day was to raise awareness about the experiences of Aboriginal People (i.e.: Residential Schools, Assimilation, Inequality, and more). The day included our keynote speaker, Chief Robert Joseph, many Aboriginal Elders, guests and community members. All senior students had a morning and afternoon assembly with Aboriginal lessons, cultural experiences, and powerful conversations with our guests throughout the day. The new curriculum for Social Studies rolling out next fall 2016 will encompass many of these histories and this was a great day to start the conversation of educating, healing, and looking forward. With the huge success of this day, we are already planning another day for this coming year. Look for an announcement in early spring 2016 for the date and all details. Learning in Depth
Student Inquiry Projects BURNABY NORTH SOCIAL STUDIES 2013- 2017 In 2013-2014 Ms. Carey started her Learning in Depth Project with her social studies 8 class while she was working on her masters degree at Simon Fraser University working with Dr. Kieran Egan. LiD is an excellent opportunity for students to investigate and research topics connected to the existing curriculum and connect it to their own interests through inquiry and imagination. Last year, in 2014-2015, Ms. Carey worked with the Social Studies Department to implement Learning in Depth into the Socials Honours courses as part of the enrichment to Honours. The student inquiry work will continue this fall 2015-2016 in honours and regular classes.
